'rant on society.

Hey Ryloggers,

Note:- This might  a lot of stuff, some people can't digest. (Hopefully. ) This is not an attack on any social group, so if any religious or extremist NUTCASE decides to attack me about this I'd like to remind you about this beautiful little cross sign which is just at the top of your browser window. Now be on your merry way, where everything is perfect and  bubbly.  For more open minded people, its kinda long but i hope you will read. :)

Our society is run by insane people for insane objectives. I think we're being run by maniacs for maniacal ends and I think I'm liable to be put away as insane for expressing that. That's what's insane about it. - John Lennon

Over the years philosophers, sociologist, political thinkers and psychologists have all described society in many different ways. It always ranges from a collection of people living together to attain common goals, bla bla. But from where I stand, I see society and all its social groups as nothing but a gigantic controlling mechanism. It controls what we eat, what we do, how we sleep, when we sleep, what we do, why we do it, how we do it, what we believe etc and it is all done in the good name of 'guiding' us.

For long, society has dictated whats right and whats not. It has been done through moral codes, customs, traditions etc. As part of our socialization, we are not only taught the basic things that differentiates between man and animal, but also who we are supposed to like and who we are supposed to hate, what things we are supposed to do and how we are supposed to do that. Society has for long regulated and controlled human life through two facets of the same coin:

Love and Hate.

I'm not saying that Love isn't an important human emotion, but love is also a tool of social control. We are restricted by Love. Love for our race or nation, is utilized so that we would be blind to the atrocities committed by our own people. Love for our family and parents are used to restrict our every move from early age itself, to make us conform to their way of life. Love for religion and love for god(s) is used as a tool of hate, distrust and anger towards other religious groups. I find it actually kinda ironic, that Love is what is used to antagonize other people. That being said, Love is not at all different from hate. Love is not the opposite of hate, just another form of it. Love and Hate are the reasons for the creation of in groups and out groups, so ultimately Love, what is supposed to be everything that is good about the world is the birth of racism. Heck, Love has also been used by industrialists as a bloodsucking machinery off the lovesick masses, so next time you go all out on a valentines day, ask yourself is it really necessary to have one day to celebrate love?

We defend our country with our lives
We pretend to see truth in all these lies
'Cause in the end.. We were men
  - THEORY OF A DEADMAN, WE WERE MEN. (Awesome song)
Now, take Marriage as a social institution. Has anybody ever considered why they get married? To celebrate Love? If so, who said that you have to register love? Yes, Society. Its once again Society's way of controlling what we do and how we do it. Why is society still refusing to accept Live In relationships. Why is it still burnt into our mindsets, that marriage is the true act of two souls becoming one? Only, because Society and all its social groups have taught us that.. have taught us to believe that.. The aim of it all? Once again, controlling the lives of people. And to legitimize sex, of course. That's the reason, they would have us believe anyway.

Okay leave Marriage. Lets talk about Dominance and inferiority, Humans Over Animals, Men Over Women, White over Black. I've said the origin of all these has lied in our narcissism. And while it is true that it is the dark side of human nature to always want superiority over our fellows, (Also the birth of BDSM. the whole bondage submission thing, the theme behind '50 shades of Grey.' BTW, to all reading fanatics out there, if you are fortunate enough to not have read 50 shades of Grey yet, PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT READ IT. Its an insult to literature itself. I'm sure some of the great writers of the past would be groveling in their graves) this superiority complex is not the only reason for birth of dominance This too, has been Society's way of bringing order through a hierarchical arrangement.

And because, a lot of people have already been ranting about media's role in control I won't even say much about it. its a given. Movies and cinema project what they want us to believe, most of the time what the government wants us to believe.

For instance, World Wrestling Entertainment. the WWE. my most favorite show since I was a kid has always been monday night wars, the drama, the fighting, the comedy that has centered WWE was always so appealing. And it still remains the case. But just to tell you a little about how even the WWE has been influenced the US government's own vendettas. When the US government were at verbal blows with the French, WWE brings a pair of supposed Frenchmen as heels (the bad guys.) and they annoy people to no end, with singing the french national anthem and being a pain in the ass, generally. When the US people started losing faith in the US Army after the prolonged Iraq war, WWE used babyfaces ( the good guys) that people actually love and adore, to cut promos about the US Army, to bring about the whole nationalist spirit. Also, when War on Terrorism began and USA was at blows with a lot of muslim nations voila, an Arab American wearing a turban comes and pisses the hell out of everyone with his self righteous speeches.

Take smoking as an example too. Not having much of scientific knowledge, i wont go on detail but there are like million different things which hurts your physiology more than smoking. And even the environment, plastic bags, aerosol sprays, cutting down trees etc cause a lot of harm to the environment too, but why is smoking frowned upon? Cause its something which society believes is indecent and that stigma has to survive one way or the other.

Now moving on to happier things, and i m not saying this as if its something wrong but just to prove a point. If you think about your soaps and sitcoms particularly the funny ones, whats the whole point of pre-recorded laughter being placed at certain events. Sure, some of these events really are funny and you would have laughed even without it, but the whole point is to tell you when to laugh. Give you the illusion that its funny even if its not. So some of us, actually even laugh when we don't get the joke in a sick way so that people wouldn't think we are humorless.

Okay, So If I were to continue talking about the ways in which Society controls us.. I'd probably go on to write a few more pages and I already have the feeling that this is too long for most people to read so lets skip to the point I want to make....

The one who follows the crowd would usually get no further than the crowd. The one who walks alone will find himself in places no one else has ever been - Einstein.

The most beautiful thing about human beings has always been our sense of uniqueness and self identity. We were made so unique, that no two people not even twins have the same fingerprint. But as we grow up, undergo the process of socialization we are immediately instilled with social stigmas, prejudices and stereotypes. And in the process, we end up losing our individualism.

But the question is, is being part of the group that important? Is it worth losing our sense of self. The very thing that all of us can be proud of. We may lose everything as we go through life, wealth, health, family, loved once, get our heartbroken but take everything away and at the core, we still remain individuals. Is anything in life, worth sacrificing that individuality? When I see, adults of today talking about different issues it actually is sad. Because put in a different style, different words they just repeat the words that I hear so often on TV and newspapers spoken by politicians, religious figures. The fact is, they think they have an opinion but they don't. They just repeat what these leaders say, they no longer have any sense of self at all.

When a leader speaks his reflection lies. You don't have to follow anyone only you can set you free.
               - Cult of Personality

politicians are put there to give you the idea you have freedom choice...you dont you have owners they own you... media is put there to give you the idea that you have freedom of expression and the news you watch is true....it isn't its all an illusion

            - Anonymous Art of Revolution

Einstein was right. At the end of the day, it is not which group you are part of or which leader you follow, that would get you places. Its the person you are. Someone might disagree, saying that i m undermining society. that these socio cultural factors are what created this individual that i talk about. otherwise the person would be nothing but tabula rosa - the blank slate.  And they would be quite right. And I admit, its quite the paradox. Without Society, and social groups and socialization we would be nothing but a bundle of genes but we should know when to draw the line.

I might be coming off as a major anarchist here but that's not what i believe. I do believe in rules and social control. It was a great man (Red Forman. Those, who watched That 70's show, come on could anyone be greater than him right? And those who didn't, WATCH That 70's show!!!) that once said, 'Without rules we'd be hanging on branches throwing our crap at each other' And Aristotle was right in saying that anyone who thinks he can live without society and doesn't depend on society is either beast or god.

But What I'm saying is, one must start seeing themselves as a member of society, uplift the individual in them in par with society not give society a status above yourself, not let society dictate what you do or the person you become. both negatively and positively. While I've talked about how society controls people, there is also the other extreme. Those who go in extreme deviance just not to conform to norms. So, any leader or any social group in my opinion should not be given that much importance enough to change the person you are in any extremes.

Well, thats just me ranting. Feel free to criticize constructively, no extremist nuts once again.

'Where I'd like to be.

Hey Ryloggers..
Its been a while. College and well general laziness have prevented me from blogging much. There is a lot of issues that I wanna talk about but for now, I m tired of talking about important social issues where I as one person can't hope to change the mindset of the agitated masses. For instance, capital punishment. Much to my horror after Dr. Afraasheem's untimely murder (R.I.P) more and more people have started to believe with passion that capital punishment is inevitable. That makes a small part of me die inside.

Anyhoo, this is a happy post. I'd like to talk about the place where I've always found peace.. The place where I'm most happy. As a person, I have a lot of friends and of course family that i hold really near to my heart and mean the world to me and I love being around them, but I've always been someone for whom 'Me' time is very important. After a couple of routine weeks, I just wanna sink back, put on Greenday at full volume and just soak in my thoughts, you know? Sleep a lot, maybe read a bit? watch something like That 70's show or Friends which amuses the hell out of me and get back to happy times :D.

So that brings me to the place which makes me most happy. It has always been the water. And by water in the strictest sense, I mean the sea.. The beautiful Maldivian waters under the gleaming sun glazed by the equator heat, that's just something which is irreplaceable. Its not the same but being alone in a pool in the beautiful (but well chlorinated) water holds similar attraction to me. What really touches me about water is its meditative quality. Meditation has always had a spiritual and not religious meaning to me. For me, meditation isn't connecting with god. you've got  prayer for that.. Meditation is reaching deep within my soul and getting in touch with myself.. As my basic hypnosis teacher once said, Its about drawing all your thoughts, worries and insecurities on an imaginary slate and wiping it clean so as you lie there listening to yourself breathe in and out, the only thing that has any meaning is then and there is the blissful state you are in, completely in tune with nature and yourself. And though practice, has allowed me to be able to reach this state of meditation often, combo of water and the open sky had always had the best effect.

So, yea.. Thats  my little rant on my bliss  moment. I'm sure I'd be back with something on corporal punishment or Family Roles which i have quite a lot to say about when my spirit is less crushed by the ignorance of my country folk.

The Perks of being a wallflower.

Hello Rylog and Ryloggers,
So I did this Psycho Project which I m particularly proud of. But its also longer than I can post here. So I thought I d post the Intro and the conclusion which particularly sums up what I m trynna say. And the book is The Perks of Being a Walflower. its a MUST read. for everyone.
Introduction
As we go through our everyday lives, sit next to many different people in class or at lectures or in offices and maybe a thousand more people on the bus and we often claim some of these people to be weird or unusual not considering for a second that they might think the same about us. We often forget that every person we meet is not just another person but another life story, a life of experiences, grievances, joy, regrets and accomplishments and before we judge them for what we see of them maybe it is important for us to actually wonder why, they are the way they are. But then again that might be the dilemma of the human mind, the inability to think out of the box which is you, your experiences and that of the people you know. Maybe that is the ultimate cosmic joke, that we the self proclaimed evolved species always claim to try and help others and solve other’s problems but never try to understand why the other person is the way they are. As paradoxical as the whole thing is, maybe it is important for all of us to put ourselves before others because at the end of the day, it is our lives that we have to lead not that of the guy sitting next to you in the bus.  And this is the central theme of the book,  It’s about a guy who tries to think, to understand and to make sense of all the drama he sees on day to day basis and he gets so involved in thinking about it, he never found it in his heart to participate and create some drama himself. The Perks of being a Wallflower introduces us to the mismatches, excitement and dynamism which is teenage life. The Perks of being a Wallflower is the story of Charlie, the ultimate wallflower.
Conclusion
The Perks of being a wallflower is not an average teenage growing up story. It must not be confused as a sob love story despite Charlie’s affections for Sam being a huge part of how everything played off. But its rather the story of a teenage boy who had suffered much as a kid and due to being constantly told that his worries isn’t as important cause other people have it worse, he himself ends up believing that, that’s why he never learns how to deal with his problems. It’s a story of a boy who had lost two people who was dear to him leaving him miserable and alone beyond anything. It’s a story of a boy who is smarter way beyond his years but his intellect is not brought out because he doesn’t participate in day to day life but rather he spends his time pondering how things are and why people behave the way they do. It’s a story of a boy who has been alone for so long that he forgets how to adjust with people. It’s a story of a boy who is selfless and always puts what others want before his own wants which is why he just lets others do away whatever they want with him. This is seen when Patrick kisses him and he just lets him do that because he thought that was his role as a friend. I believe that there is much that each of us can learn from the experiences of Charlie and in a lot of ways a lot of us can actually relate to certain aspects of Charlie’s life. The Perks of being a wallflower is also teaches us the importance of proper communication between parents, teachers and children, only then can these adults help their children effectively. I believe this book is a must read for many people interest in development psychology and drug abuse. It is often believed by many that adolescents go for drugs to be ‘cool’ but actually there are teenagers with real problems who need the guidance of their parents and teachers but for that these adults must take a leaf out of Bill’s book in this story and come down to the level of the children and treat them as young adults not a bunch of kids. This is also a valuable lesson for the people who deal with criminal behavior. It teaches us that administering severe punishments on child molesters and abusers is not the answer to the problem. What we need is a system where both the abuser and the abused must be properly rehabilitated. Consider Child abuse to be a tree, punishing these offenders are just cutting down branches, if we want to cut down the tree we have to poison it from the roots. The dilemmas that Charlie faces are not alien to most of us, we too have faced or will face a lot of these challenges in life and given that Charlie had been a recipe for disaster, it does give us room to learn from the mistakes that he did make. This amazing novel by Chbosky teaches us the importance of confiding in people, trusting in people because any one person alone should not be allowed to bear burdens of his everyday life because sooner or later we’d see this person cracking under pressure.  I think it also poses a lesson to educational reformers that what young people really need is not to be disciplined or managed but to be guided, trusted and allowed to develop their full potential in their educational life. The Perks of being a Wallflower is my favorite book till today and I think every person must read it at least once as it teaches us much on how to cope with life.

Trouble in Paradise - The Chair of Justice, the only Solution?

TROUBLE IN PARADISE

IS THE CHAIR OF JUSTICE, THE ONLY SOLUTION?

Before I start off with this piece of rambling, I would like to take a moment in mourning to the death of Lawyer Najeeb, May Allah grant him paradise and give his family great patience in these troubled times.

Rest In Peace.

Now to the matter in hand, Maldives our beloved country and world famous Tourist Paradise, has as of recent times been stinking of dead bodies and mourning the merciless killing of one Maldivian brother by another and singing sorrowful tones about lost friends and loved ones. But, It would be wrong for me to say that this outburst of violence has been a sudden occurrence or has come as a surprise or due to recent events on the contrary it has been happening more often than we'd like to believe in the last decades. Gang Warfare, Revenge killings etc has been steadily increasing in number from a long time back. So whats the solution? A lot of people have speculated from the beginning, that these murders and acts of violence will never cease unless the hand of justice becomes more vigilant than now. After the murder of Ali Ishaar, some MPS in the parliament itself expressed their discontent in how the murderers managed to 'go in through one gate to prison and come in through the other.' It was the belief of many that these acts can only be stopped by abiding to Islamic Law and bringing these offenders to the Chair.

Time passed on and we hear about every lone murder or two, every other dead body found in a deserted island, one or two chopped up Maldivian brothers and sisters found in a dustbin container or something. But What did we do? Did we strengthen the Judiciary and try to bring an end to this madness? Did we revise the legislation and try to bring crucial means to stop these atrocities? No we didn't. All we did was we talked about it and abused these murderers and prayed for the souls of the dead. Then of course our political situation went more haywire than it already is, An Activist made President was removed from his position in what some call a
Coup d'état and in what others call a freedom struggle. This directly lead to riots and mayhem in the streets of Maldives due to clashes between sympathizers of the former President and the Maldivian National Defense Force. Now, its beyond the point of this article who was right and who was wrong in these clashes, the fact remains is It was the ordinary Maldivian who suffered, It was this country which was lead in a miserable state of violence and bloodshed. Cops began using unlawful means against rioters, rioters began beating the living hell out of any lone police officer or MNDF officer that they find on the street, activists from both sides began targeting different political activists and their families. And Now the MPS realize that this violence is a problem, that it needs to be stopped, that it is ruining lives, that it is damaging the economy of Maldives while all the murders that took place before was happy go lucky. We saw a MP bringing in the bill to bring Capital Punishment to Maldives into the parliament and debate was ensured.

Now Rylog readers, all of you do know about these happenings but I felt it is an important basis to be highlighted before going on with the rest of this article. Last Sunday Night, when the whole nation was getting ready to watch the Euro 2012 finals, it was shocked and disturbed and saddened by the brutal murder of Lawyer Najeeb. It seems that the solution is now clear. Capital Punishment must be ensured for this violence to stop. As some have not-so-delicately put 'some trash must be taken out to ensure peace for the rest.' It seems in this heightened emotional state this country is, there is no reason at all why capital punishment must be delayed. But oh boy, we can never be more wrong.

True. Very True. In the current situation we are in, Capital Punishment may be the only way out, but another factor comes into play here. Say we bring in electric chairs and lethal doses and establish capital punishment in Maldives.. In the current political scenario  it is very probable for a 'purge' like scenario to happen. Our Judiciary isn't the most reliable organ right now we all must admit it is widely influenced by political forces. In such a case, isn't there a chance for innocent people to be sent to the chair for political motives after sabotaged court trials etc, just with the motive of removing them from the political arena? much like what Stalin did in the Great Purge of 1937-1938.

One more thing, President Maumoon made a lot of mistakes in his 30 year old rule but what was the instigating force against Maumoon? The one murder of Evan Naseem in jail. As it is sadly obvious for most of us, the mindset of the average Maldivian person is political biased right now. Say, President Waheeds government prosecutes a certain criminal for all the right reasons and sends them to the chair, with so much dissent against him right now in Maldives and the opposition just looking for a way to get him removed and hold a presidential election I'd bet my right arm (metaphorically of course.) that the opposition would use it as an instigation against the government to create further dissent and bring about a revolt. And I m not just talking about the current opposition, that's what the current ruling coalition would do too, roles reversed.  And sadly enough, Maldivians would fall prey to this And the families of the criminal would ofcourse unwittingly, become puppets and poster boys and girls against the government. We've seen this happen before, we'd see this happen again.

The Problem in Maldives is people really don't give two shits about bringing justice to victims, what they care about is using every little thing that happens in the socio-politcal arena for their very own color based motives. Yes, Maldives has reached a situation where capital punishment is becoming largely inevitable, but these are points which need to be considered before bringing such a legislation.

Now, I admit I have one great flaw. I have never managed to convince myself or allowed someone to convince me that Capital Punishment is an effective means. I find it slightly barbaric and not in tune with modern times. Call it my stupidity? naivety? strong lack of judgement or one sided humanitarianism but despite that Even I do Believe that now we must try and see if even bringing this unhumanly measure for the greater good could bring peace to Maldives. But I think certain preparations are very important before such a measure is implemented. First of all, political parties must at once pledge infront of the Chief Justice and Speaker of Parliament, with their hands on the holy Quran in front of a mass gathering of people and also in written form, that they would never whatever the circumstances whether they hold power or they are the opposition use capital punishment for their political motives. It would be a historical pledge taken by Maldivians for the betterment of Maldives as a country
and to battle this social unrest. Secondly, a humongous
awareness campaign must be brought about to make the average Maldivian more aware about this legislation and how it is a double ended sword and we must only use these drastic measures with great caution and to never let the media or political leaders manipulate you into trying to achieve anything but Justice from Capital Punishment. Also its important for the public to know this legislation very well and know the circumstances in which capital punishment can be brought about. AND LASTLY BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, THE JUDICIARY MUST BE REFORMED AND MADE A RESPONSIBLE AND AN INDEPENDENT ENTITY BEFORE WE EVEN CONSIDER BRINGING IN ELECTRIC CHAIRS.

The Human Psyche and Animal Rights

Hey, this is my article for Ecocare Maldives on 'The Human Psyche and its much undermined relationship with Animal rights. I have hoped to bring our social well being and Animal Rights together. I hope i did justice to this topic which lots of people need to know about

THE HUMAN PSYCHE AND ANIMAL
                         ABUSE
.

What does the above photo reveal to you about the person?

All of our mutual hopes and aspirations lie in the conservation of our environment and maintaining the beloved ecological balance. We are also gathered together to provide a forum to advocate the protection of the rights of the much neglected weaker species which we humans tend to believe are beneath us.

But we must ask ourselves, why? Why do we captivate, abuse and even murder animals. We already know from our recent experience with the dolphin lagoon or cage scenario that we captivate animals for commercial reasons and to reap material benefits at their expense. But also another reason for this is deep rooted issues within the human psyche or soul itself.

Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and American Psychiatric Association(APA) have done studies which show that Animal abuse is indeed the most basic symptom or characteristic feature of CONDUCT DISORDER which is manifested even from childhood, itself.  We see that those who are diagnosed with conduct disorder’s initial victims are small animals like cats, rabbits etc. and when they grow up they take on bigger victims like their wives or children. It is also proven that some mobsters or thugs also have conduct disorder with their initial victims being animals.

Conduct disorder is a psychological disorder diagnosed in childhood that presents itself through a repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior in which the basic rights of others or major age-appropriate norms are violated. These behaviors are often referred to as "antisocial behaviors.” – Source Wikipedia.

Animal cruelty is also referred to as zoosadism which is also one of the stages of ‘Macdonald triad’ (the others being aggression and interestingly enough, Enuresis (bed wetting.)) which leads to sociopathic behavior. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), United States of America have conducted surveys and medical diagnosis to find out that sociopaths who are characterized by murder or abuse or violence, for the sake of the pleasure (Psychological or Sexual) obtained by it and psychopaths who are often serial killers (such as Jack the Ripper himself) known to murder a series of people to showcase their superiority are actually socially depraved as children and were known to spend time torturing small animals in various violent fashions and finding enjoyment in doing that.

Hence, Authorities in western countries are actually encouraging and calling parents to submit children and teens who torture animals for psychiatric diagnosis and treatment.

Moreover, it is quite possible to find a quite close link between animal abuse and other social issues of the day:-

Abusing an animal is a way for a human to find power/joy/fulfillment through the torture of a victim they know cannot defend itself.

Then, when we actually sit back and think about it, it is the same thing with rape. What is rape if not, a way for a human to find power/joy/fulfillment through the sexual torture of a victim they know cannot defend themselves.

The same can be applied to domestic violence and child abuse, it too is
a way for a human to find power/joy/fulfillment through the torture of a victim they know cannot defend themselves.

Before concluding this already elongated article, I would like to bring to your notice the relationship between Animal abuse to other social stratification and racism. It is quite obvious that chauvinism is a sad human character.  We believe we are superior to other beings. So isn’t it the same phenomena of Humans first, which eventually leads to White people first, Westerners First, Men First, the Rich first and other such firsts which had created social issues which we are struggling to erase even today, namely colonialism, war, racism, sexism, class and caste differences, unequal distribution of wealth and poverty? We are all god’s creation and despite the intellectual difference between us and other creatures, we are all the rightful inheritors of god’s green earth and if god has blessed us as the governors of shouldn’t we be fair and just to the other creatures too? If not what difference is there between us and a dictatorial ruler who undermines the basic rights of his subjects?
